Experiential Learning in (and sometimes outside) the History Classroom: 15 May

How can teachers use ‘fake’ scenarios to make learning real?

Our guest presenter, Brian Tynan, focuses on experiential learning through simulations and how it impacts student engagement with different topics in the humanities. He will speak about some of the different scenarios he has developed or adapted for his class and share examples of student reflection and experience with the simulations.

Presenter Brian Tynan is a professional teacher, amateur disc golf player and enthusiastic backcountry snowboarder. He left the US in 2010 and has been studying, teaching and traveling in Europe ever since. In a previous life, he was an outdoor educator and this experience is where he developed his pedagogical philosophy which he has now brought into the classroom. He is currently a resident scholar at Leysin American School until the end of this academic year. Resident scholars pursue questions of their own interest, in their own classrooms, and share what they find with friends and colleagues.

Moderator Paul Magnuson is director of educational research at Leysin American School and co-chair of the ECIS SIG “Research Informed Schools.” He is a frequent blogger and presenter. He is also an instructor with Moreland University.
