Every individual’s experience of learning a language influences their perceptions of how languages are learned. These perceptions, paired with shifts in research over the last 50 years, have created myths. When school policy is based on these myths, it can have a negative impact on our students’ social-emotional and academic growth, as well as their language development. Debunking some of these myths is essential as we develop inclusive policies that support multilingual learners.
