Creating Systems for Belonging
Who truly belongs in our schools? Which groups feel a strong sense of belonging, and which do not? How do our school structures, curriculum, and daily practices shape inclusion and exclusion? Middle and Teacher leaders are uniquely positioned to explore these questions, minimise barriers, and create a sense of belonging for all students.
This course will examine different ways to explore and create belonging, drawing from theoretical perspectives, research methods, and practical initiatives. Strategies will be investigated for gathering and analysing data, considering how language and policies shape belonging, and developing approaches to move from individual experiences to systemic change.
By the end of the course, through discussion, case studies, and collaborative problem-solving, participants will identify actionable steps to foster a more inclusive school environment.

- Who experiences a strong sense of belonging in our schools, and who does not?
- How do we gather data on belonging in ways that reflect the diversity of our school community?
- How can data help us move from individual experiences to identifying systemic patterns of exclusion?
- How do curriculum, policies, and school practices reinforce social differences, and how can we challenge these structures?

Your Facilitator:
Michael Neumann is an enthusiastic educational leader, deeply committed to fostering inclusive and engaging learning environments. His international teaching journey began in Taiwan, and he is now in his seventh year in Malta, where he is currently the Elementary Assistant Principal and the Diversity, Inclusion, and Well-Being Lead at Verdala International School. Next year, Michael is excited to start his new role as a DEIJ Coordinator at St. George’s International School in Luxembourg. During his time at Verdala International School, Michael has been actively advocating for the school’s DEIJ journey.
He initiated and co-wrote the school’s anti-discrimination policy and led various workshops within the school community. A highlight of his work is coordinating Verdala International School’s Friday Focus programme, where he collaborates with monthly Diversity, Inclusion, and Well-Being (DIW) champions to develop student inquiries into various DIW themes. Michael holds a BA in Sociology, a B.Ed in Primary/Junior Education, and an M.Ed in Educational Leadership and Policy.
Through his M.Ed from the University of Toronto, he facilitated a two-month professional development programme where he explored a novel exercise that involved educators investigating the juxtaposition of gender and racial practices to promote inclusivity. Michael is thrilled to be one of the facilitators of the ECIS DEIJ Leadership Cohort, alongside Loretta and Yasmine. He is eager to create a community of learners and leaders dedicated to unlearning, relearning, and fostering a strong sense of belonging for all.
