Facilitator: Iman Azzi
This session explores how educators can approach research within international schools reflexively, examining the various ways our experiences with and assumptions about international education, global citizenship, and international mindedness may shape our research. The session introduces a five-question framework to promote stronger reflexive practice. Drawing on examples from graduate dissertations by educators, we will review three types of insider status (site, industry, and cultural) and discuss practical approaches to researching multilingual and multicultural environments. Attendees will leave with a clearer sense of some of the ethical and methodological challenges of studying international schools and how reflexivity can strengthen research-informed debates in this field.

Dr. Iman Azzi is a critical scholar of international education, focusing on the historical development of international schooling. She is the author of A Framework for Researching International Schooling and the International Baccalaureate: Towards a Reflexive Practice (Routledge), which draws on her analysis of over 200 graduate dissertations. She holds a PhD from University College London and previously taught history and civics at an international school in the Middle East.
