Libraries SIG Webinar – Lessons from the Library: Critical Information Literacy and the International School Library: What It Is and How to Teach It: 09 April
15:00 (London time)
Hosted by the ECIS Library and Information Services Special Interest Group
Presenter: Gabriella Reyes
This webinar explores how educators can empower students to critically navigate today’s complex information landscape. CIL emphasises understanding the socio-political contexts, power dynamics, and biases behind information creation and dissemination—essential skills in a globalized world. This presentation highlights the challenges of addressing cultural and linguistic diversity in international education and provides actionable strategies for incorporating CIL into libraries, including collection development and instruction. By integrating CIL into teaching practices, educators can foster critical thinking, global awareness, and ethical engagement with diverse perspectives, preparing students to become responsible global citizens.
Gabriella Reyes works as an educator, librarian/information manager, consultant, and researcher. She has held positions in multiple countries and currently splits her time between North America and Asia. Her research deals with knowledge creation and epistemology in postcolonial educational contexts, including both the pursuit of epistemic justice and understanding how knowledge is recognized and organized around the world. She brings deep interdisciplinary knowledge to her work. Past projects include published research on semi-controlled folksonomy in libraries, 15th-20th century rare books/special collections metadata management, secondary school research skills curriculum development, UX data collection and design in a Chinese learning commons, and an Indigenous materials reclassification/cataloging initiative at an American academic institution.
